How to Spot a New Airdrop: Real Project or Scam?
By Walid Mograbi · · 2 min read
Use a short safety checklist before interacting with any new token in your wallet. A free token can still be risky, and one bad click can lead to theft.
Airdrop reality check
Airdrops can feel exciting, especially when they appear suddenly. Treat each incoming unknown token as a risk item until it passes your checks.
1) Do not assume a free token is trustworthy
- Airdrop tokens are often used for both legitimate and malicious campaigns.
- The presence of a token in your wallet does **not** mean the project is reputable, tradeable, or safe to interact with.
- Core lesson: *free* is not the same as *safe*.
2) Verify where the token appears
- If the token is not in a trusted discovery list and the chain explorer shows suspicious signals, treat it as high-risk.
- Prefer widely recognized, consistent token metadata over a random appearance.
- If you cannot clearly validate context, stop and do not act.
3) Ignore failed-transaction bait
- Attackers often use failed transfer messages to push you to external links.
- If a wallet action fails and you are sent to an unknown site for the next step, do **not** follow it.
- This is often the path used in token-related phishing.
> High-risk signal: transfer failure + untrusted link.
4) Refuse recovery-secret and unknown signing requests
- Never provide a seed phrase, mnemonic, or private recovery phrase.
- Never sign any transaction you do not fully understand.
- A request for a secret phrase or unclear signature approval is an immediate stop signal.
> Warning: any request for recovery phrase or unclear signature is a likely phishing attempt.
5) Three-step pre-action checklist
1. Is the token expected? If no, continue with high caution. 2. Is the explorer behavior clean and expected? If no, do not proceed. 3. Does any message request secret phrase or weird permission? If yes, halt immediately. Only continue when all three points are clearly safe.
6) Practical takeaway
This checklist helps you filter suspicious airdrops fast and avoid losses from the first interaction. Use it every time before swapping, approving, or clicking a recovery/claim link.
7) Mini risk rule you can memorize
**Unknown token + suspicious explorer route + unclear signing request = skip immediately.**
