The Closing Price Is Not Always the Last Number
By Walid Mograbi · · 1 min read
The closing figure can differ if a platform is showing the last after-hours trade instead of the regular-session close.
What this lesson means
The closing price is not always the last number you see on a screen. Some platforms show a price that comes from trading after the regular session, which can make the final displayed number look different from the official close.
What the official close is
The official closing price is usually the last price in the regular session at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. That is the number you should treat as the regular-session close.
Why platforms can disagree
A platform may display the last trade after the close. If that happens, the number on the screen can change even though the regular session has already ended.
How to check the number
If the price looks different from what you expected, check whether it comes from the regular session or from after-hours trading. That distinction explains most of the confusion.
Why this matters
Knowing the difference helps you read the price accurately and avoid mixing the official close with movement after the session.
Warning and quick checklist
A low-volume number can mislead you if it comes from a late trade outside the regular session.
