Will your broker affect how your stock order is executed?

A stock order can be routed through different markets (exchange, market maker, or ECN), so execution timing and final price may vary before the order is filled. Learn how to review the details instead of relying only on the screen quote.

How an order is executed

Once you place a stock buy or sell order, execution does not happen automatically in one fixed place. Your broker routes the order through one of several available channels before it is matched and filled.

• ECN (electronic network)

The chosen route can change execution speed, possible price, and even the practical quality of the fill.

Why timing and price may differ

The same order can return different results if route and market conditions differ. This is why the final execution can look different from the price you expected when sending the order.

Best execution as a standard

Brokers are expected to seek best execution by comparing available routes for better price, lower cost, and reasonable speed. Even with this obligation, the market can move quickly, so strict guarantees for a specific final price are not always possible.

What to do if execution is not as expected

• [ ] Confirm the exact time the order was sent and when it was filled.
• [ ] Ask which venue or market type was used.
• [ ] Check whether there was a difference between your target quote and the execution market at the transaction time.

Practical checklist to evaluate your broker

• [ ] Compare execution timestamps to estimate delay.
• [ ] Review whether the route favored best quoted price or faster completion.
• [ ] Reassess only when this is repeated across multiple trades, not after one isolated order.
