When Should You Review the Plan?

By Walid Mograbi · · 1 min read

The goal is to return to the plan, not chase the market.

The rule of review

Review the plan every 6 or 12 months, or when an asset’s weight moves outside its target range.

What to focus on

Center the review on restoring the original allocation, not on increasing the number of adjustments.

Keep it disciplined

A review should help you stay consistent and avoid random changes that pull you away from the plan.

Watch the cost of execution

If fees are charged per trade, the benefit may shrink as reviews and executions become more frequent.

Warning

Do not use repeated reviews as a substitute for the plan itself. Too many orders can raise costs.

Quick checklist

  • Fixed schedule
  • Weight drift
  • Cost per trade
